Queen of the night (Epiphyllum oxypetalum)

x2 cuttings

Epiphyllum oxypetalum, commonly known as the Dutchman's pipe cactus, princess of the night, or queen of the night, is a captivating species of cactus native to the lush landscapes stretching from Mexico to Nicaragua. This intriguing plant is renowned for its spectacular nocturnal blooms, which emerge in the cover of darkness and vanish by dawn, adding an air of mystery to any garden or indoor space.

Habitat and Growth
Unlike many cacti that thrive in arid environments, Epiphyllum oxypetalum typically grows in more humid, epiphytic settings, often found clinging to trees in tropical forests. This adaptability allows it to flourish in various conditions, making it a unique addition to succulent collections. The plant exhibits a variety of growth forms, including erect, sprawling, and scandent stems, which can reach impressive lengths of up to 6 meters (20 feet). These primary stems are rounded and may exhibit a woody base, while secondary stems are flat and elliptic, measuring up to 30 cm (12 in) by 12 cm (5 in).

The margins of the stems are often deeply crenate and undulate, giving them a distinctive appearance. A waxy coating, likely due to cutin, helps the plant retain moisture, a critical adaptation for survival in diverse climates. When cut, the stems release a gel-like substance, indicative of their water-storing capabilities.

Nocturnal Blooms
The hallmark of Epiphyllum oxypetalum is its magnificent flowers, which bloom at night and exude a powerful, sweet fragrance that attracts nocturnal pollinators. Each flower can reach dimensions of up to 30 cm (12 in) in length and 17 cm (7 in) in width. The captivating aroma is primarily composed of benzyl salicylate and methyl linoleate, making nighttime gardens a sensory delight.

The flower structure is equally fascinating: the pericarpels are smooth and green, leading to narrow bracteoles that extend up to 10 mm (0.39 in). The receptacles, reaching up to 20 cm long and 1 cm thick, are arching and display a subtle brownish hue. The outer tepals are elongated and acute, showcasing a stunning gradient of reddish to amber tones, while the inner tepals are a delicate white, oblanceolate or oblong in shape, adding contrast to the flower's overall appearance. The stamens, slender and delicate, complement the blooms with their greenish-white or white hue.

Fruits and Reproduction
Following the enchanting display of flowers, the plant produces oblong fruits, measuring up to 12 cm by 8 cm, which are purplish-red and slightly angled. These fruits add another layer of interest, contributing to the plant's beauty even after the blooms have faded.

In summary, Epiphyllum oxypetalum is a stunning specimen that embodies the allure of the night. With its dramatic, fragrant blooms and unique growth habits, it is a remarkable choice for plant enthusiasts looking to add a touch of the extraordinary to their collection.
